Reclassification of waste guidance published

The updated technical guidance WM3 on the classification and assessment of waste has been released by the Environment Agency.

The update published at the end of June introduces changes to the classification of wastes as ecotoxic (hazardous property 14, or HP14) i.e. waste that presents immediate or delayed risks to the ecosystem.

The new calculation introduced to interpret analytical results may mean that some waste that was previously classified non-hazardous is now considered hazardous and therefore can no longer be reused without further treatment.
